Learn all the secrets of the Matcha Uji Okumidori Miyako

The Matcha Uji Okumidori Miyako is a refreshing and elegant matcha from Uji, Kyoto Prefecture — the birthplace of Japan’s tea culture. Crafted from the Okumidori cultivar, this tea perfectly balances freshness, brightness, and a gentle vegetal sweetness. Its flavor opens with floral notes of lilac and jasmine, deepens into a vibrant green apple-like acidity, and finishes long with a subtle sweetness reminiscent of grape and snap peas.

Taste

Discover the results of Nio Teas’ 4 step tea tasting method

When tasting the Matcha Uji Okumidori Miyako, we explore every sensory layer: color, aroma, taste, and mouthfeel, to understand what makes this matcha so refined and distinctive.

Step 1 - Observing the Appearance

This matcha presents a beautiful, bright green color with a slightly lighter tone than typical Okumidori teas, indicating a delicate shading process. When whisked, it forms a fine, frothy foam with a creamy surface that captures the light perfectly.

Step 2 - Assessing the Aroma

The aroma is immediately captivating, a blend of sweet snap peas and gentle floral notes like lilac and jasmine. It’s delicate yet complex, evoking the first days of spring in a Japanese tea field.

Step 3 - Tasting the Tea

On the palate, the matcha begins with fresh, floral sweetness before revealing a crisp acidity reminiscent of green apple and grape. The umami is soft but balanced, allowing the vegetal notes to shine through. As the flavors evolve, they blend into a lingering finish that stays bright and clean.

Step 4 - Evaluating the sensation on the palate

The texture is smooth and medium-thick, coating the tongue with a refreshing liveliness. There’s a playful balance between sweetness, acidity, and umami, making each sip both invigorating and satisfying. The finish is long, floral, and slightly fruity, a rare combination in Japanese matcha.

Necessary teaware

To fully appreciate the Matcha Uji Okumidori Miyako, we recommend using traditional Japanese teaware:

  • Matcha Bowl (Chawan): A wide, shallow bowl that allows for smooth whisking and a fine foam texture.
  • Bamboo Whisk (Chasen): Creates the creamy, frothy consistency essential to a perfect matcha.
  • Chashaku (Bamboo Scoop): Measures the right amount of matcha for consistent flavor.
  • Sifter (Furui): Ensures the powder is aerated and free of clumps before whisking.

Location of production and farmer

Information about the farm

This matcha is sourced from Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, the spiritual home of Japanese tea. The area’s misty hills, fertile clay soils, and ideal microclimate give rise to some of Japan’s most prestigious matchas. Unlike many of our teas that come directly from a known farmer, the Matcha Uji Okumidori Miyako is sourced through Miyako, our trusted matcha sourcing partner in Japan. Miyako has deep connections with Uji’s most experienced tea producers and personally tests and verifies each batch for quality and purity. For privacy reasons, we cannot disclose the farms, but rest assured that every tea sourced through Miyako is rigorously tested to be 100% pesticide-free and of exceptional quality.

Sourced in Uji

Japan

The Matcha Uji Okumidori Miyako is produced in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, a city located on the southern outskirts of Kyoto. Renowned as the birthplace of matcha, Uji’s misty valleys, fertile soils, and gentle climate provide ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality shaded tea leaves. These unique growing conditions, combined with Miyako’s expertise in sourcing exceptional matcha, result in a tea that is both sophisticated and refreshingly modern.

Cultivar and tea plant variety

The Matcha Uji Okumidori Miyako is made from the Okumidori cultivar, one of Japan’s most respected tea varieties known for its depth, roundness, and balanced umami.

  • Okumidori

Okumidori is prized for producing matcha with a naturally sweet and vegetal profile. It offers a deeper green hue and a soft, mellow umami compared to brighter cultivars like Saemidori. In this Uji-grown matcha, the Okumidori cultivar shines through with delicate florals, subtle acidity, and a fresh, lingering finish — a true reflection of its Kyoto terroir.
